S123: B-cells: The most economical weapons factory in Splash Hilary 2019 (Feb. 23, 2019)
B-cells are important players in an organism's response to pathogens. What is impressive about these cells is that even though they typically contain a few thousand genes, they can make over a trillion different antibodies to protect us against pathogens. This class explores the genetic mechanisms which allow B-cells to produce a massive range of antibodies and we will answer questions such as: What are the steps of adaptive immunity? What is the function/characteristics of antibodies? What is the genetic mechanism behind antibody diversity? How is it controlled?
